Graft count versus hair count: what's actually transplanted

A single graft is a follicular unit, a small, naturally occurring cluster that can carry one, two, three or occasionally four hairs. This is why two patients quoted the same graft number can end up with a different total hair count: someone with naturally denser, multi-hair follicular units gets more actual hairs transplanted per graft than someone with mostly single-hair units. Can everything be done in one session?

Most FUE cases up to around 3,500–4,000 grafts are completed in a single 4–8 hour session under local anaesthesia, with same-day discharge and desk work possible within 2–3 days. For Norwood 7 patients needing 4,000 or more grafts, the donor area sometimes can't safely supply that many follicular units in one sitting without over-thinning it, so a second session, spaced months apart to let the donor zone recover, is occasionally planned in advance rather than decided on the day.
